As a noted genealogist has claimed, most Americans are descended from kings.

The CEO connected the dots.  The pursuit of genealogical information provides a fascinating look at our individual family’s history.  Katherine Nerret was initially helped by the work that her mother had done on one small segment, one family name, in their heritage.  A long-time friend who has had amazing success in her research further encouraged and helped her along in this, now, top-ranked hobby in the U. S.  Katherine equates it with collecting baseball cards or Barbie dolls.  It becomes addictive.  On the Internet, one can, within seconds, locate the long lost and create a family portrait out of scraps of information.  Each clue leads to another.

Academically, Katherine is an art and architectural historian, and has studied the art, artifacts and buildings produced by human beings and how these items tell the story of us, of all of us.  Certainly, science, math, and the study of languages are of extreme importance for the student.  But without a study of what has gone before, a study of history Katherine believes, we cannot understand each other and what makes or has made various people or groups “tick” and why some things have happened.   If we took the time to learn about the other group, the other people, it would be a better world, she believes.  And you can start with the learning by researching your genealogy.

Katherine says, “if you go back far enough, ten generations, twenty generations, you will find that many of us are related to each other.”  Her girlfriend – the one that encouraged her on her genealogical search -- and Katherine are 9X cousins.  They share a seventeenth century colonial English immigrant ancestor.  Her friend can claim a connection to the Mayflower.  Katherine cannot.  At least, not yet.

So, Katherine suggests, history is fascinating, as are your ancestors.
